Air conditioning that runs from the leisure battery, so you can cool the van on a wild camp, at a festival or on the move, with no hook-up and no generator.

What battery-powered cooling asks of your system

An air conditioner is the largest load a van's DC system will ever carry. The Dometic CoolAir RTX 2000, for example, draws between 5A and 30A on 24V, roughly 120W to 720W. Across a hot evening that adds up to more than most weekend builds store, which is why these units belong in vans with a large lithium bank and serious charging from the alternator and solar.

  • Battery: lithium, sized for the hours you want to cool, with capacity left for the fridge and everything else.
  • Charging: a high-output DC-DC charger to refill while driving, plus as much solar as the roof allows.
  • Cabling: heavy DC cable and a correctly rated fuse close to the battery. The currents involved make this non-negotiable.

The Roam Wired calculator sizes the battery, charging, cable and fuse for your build.

12V or 24V

Most campervans and motorhomes run a 12V leisure system, so the Indel B Plein-Aircon and the Dometic CoolAir RTX 1000 are the natural fit. The CoolAir RTX 2000 runs on 24V and suits trucks, expedition vehicles and larger builds designed around 24V batteries. Check your system voltage before you choose.

Fitting

These are self-contained roof units. The Plein-Aircon fits a 400 × 400mm roof cut-out in roofs 30 to 70mm thick and needs a ceiling diffuser, which we offer as a package. The RTX 2000 installs into an existing roof hatch with up to 20° of tilt. Ask us to check your roof and electrical plan before ordering.
