12V compressor fridges, drawer fridges and 3-way absorption fridges for campervans and motorhomes, each listed with the one figure that matters most off-grid: how much power it uses in a day.

Compressor or absorption?

A compressor fridge runs on 12V (many also on 24V), cools like a domestic fridge, keeps working in hot weather and does not need to be level. It needs no gas, and models such as Dometic's NRX need no flue or external vents. The trade-off is that it draws from your leisure battery around the clock.

A 3-way absorption fridge runs on gas, 230V or 12V. On gas it is independent of your batteries, which suits motorhomes that spend time away from hook-up without much solar. It needs a flue and ventilation grilles, must be fitted by a qualified gas engineer, and draws heavily on 12V, so 12V running suits driving time.

How much power a 12V fridge uses

Fridge Capacity Daily use at 12V
Indel B Cruise 42 42L About 18.5Ah
Indel B Cruise 49 49L About 23Ah
Indel B Cruise 65 65L About 24Ah
Thetford T2095E drawer 90L 26.6Ah
Dometic NRX 60C 58L About 27Ah at 20°C
Dometic NRX 80C 78L About 29Ah at 20°C
Dometic NRX 90 92L About 33Ah
Thetford T2152 150L 37.6Ah
Thetford T2138 138L About 38Ah
Dometic NRX 115C 116L About 43Ah at 20°C
Indel B Elite 86 85L About 44Ah
Thetford T2160 158L About 48Ah
Thetford T2175 174L About 50Ah

Figures are the manufacturers' daily consumption or average current, converted at 12V. Hot weather increases them: Dometic's NRX figures rise by between a third and two thirds at 32°C. As a rule, the fridge is the biggest continuous load in a van, so size the battery and charging around it. The Roam Wired calculator does it for your whole build, and a power station will run most of these for several days.

Choosing a size

  • 40 to 50 litres suits weekends for two and small campervans.
  • 60 to 90 litres covers longer trips and most panel van conversions.
  • 130 litres and up is for motorhomes, families and full-time living, usually with a separate freezer drawer.

Before you order

Measure the cabinet: height, width and depth, including space behind for the compressor where it sits on the back. Check which way the door needs to open; several models have reversible hinges. Send us your layout and we'll confirm the fit.
