Weeks at a time, with a heater, indoor cooking and work to do.

The reference load here is 850Wh a day: compressor fridge, diesel heater on low, lighting, a laptop and phones, and the usual pumps and oddments. At that draw the arithmetic changes. Capacity alone eventually runs out, so most builds in this bracket pair a larger power station with a way to refill it on the move.

Why capacity is only half the answer

A 2,304Wh unit covers 2.7 days from full. Doubling the battery gets you to five and a half days and costs four figures. A 560W alternator charger costs £299 and replaces a full day of use in ninety minutes of driving, indefinitely.

If you are moving between places anyway, generation beats storage on cost, on weight and on payload. Buy the capacity you need for the longest static stretch, then buy the charger.

What to look for

  • A 2,000W or larger inverter if you want to cook on induction rather than carry gas
  • Fast AC charging, so a lunch stop on a hookup is worth something
  • An expansion path, so a second battery is an option later rather than a rebuild
