Diesel, gas and electric heating and hot water for campervans and motorhomes, listed with the fuel use and 12V current you need to plan a build.
Diesel, gas or electric?
- Diesel heaters such as the Yilkar YH2 draw fuel from the vehicle's own tank, so there's no gas to carry. They suit vans with no LPG system.
- Gas blown-air heaters such as the Whale HeatAir run on LPG. The HeatAir can also add electric heat on hook-up, so you save gas on paid pitches.
- Electric elements run from campsite hook-up. They're too power-hungry for a leisure battery, so treat them as a hook-up bonus rather than your main heat.
Compare the heaters
| Heater | Fuel | Output | 12V draw |
|---|---|---|---|
| Yilkar YH2 | Diesel | 0.9–2.5kW | 3A running, 8A starting |
| Whale HeatAir 5GTE | LPG + 230V | 5kW, plus up to 3kW electric | From 0.6A on low gas |
| Whale HeatAir 6GTE | LPG + 230V | 6kW, plus up to 3kW electric | From 0.6A on low gas |
Hot water
The Whale Expanse heats 8 litres on LPG, on a 750W or 1,500W electric element, or on both. It comes in underfloor and onboard versions and draws 0.48A at 12V while running.
Power and fitting
Even gas and diesel heaters need 12V for their fans and electronics, which adds up over a long winter night. Put your heater into the Roam Wired calculator alongside your fridge and lights to size the battery. Anything connected to LPG should be fitted and commissioned by a qualified LPG installer, and a diesel heater means tapping into the fuel tank and routing an exhaust. Ask us if you're unsure what suits your van.
